Overview

Meghalaya rewards travellers who leave the highway.

Shillong is the comfortable base, but the state’s character sits in Sohra’s cliffs, Mawlynnong’s village lanes, Dawki’s river and the humid trek down to Nongriat’s living root bridges.

Monsoon is dramatic here — waterfalls roar and roads get slower. Dry season is easier for first-timers and photography without constant rain delays.

Most strong Meghalaya trips mix one urban hub with two or three nature belts rather than trying to cover every waterfall on the map.

Practical information

How to reach Meghalaya

By air

Fly to Guwahati, then drive about 3–4 hours to Shillong. Shillong airport has limited connectivity.

By train

Guwahati is the rail gateway; continue by road into the Khasi hills.

By road

Shared taxis and private cabs run Guwahati–Shillong through the day.

Do you need permits in Meghalaya?

Indian citizens generally do not need a special permit for Meghalaya. Foreign nationals should carry valid ID and follow local entry rules where posted. Some village trails and parks have local fees.

  • Valid photo ID for hotels
  • Local entry fees for villages and viewpoints
  • Trek permissions where communities require them

Rules for specific trails can change. Confirm locally or through your operator.

What a Meghalaya trip costs

There is no single honest number. Two people on the same route in the same week can pay very differently. These are the factors that actually move the price:

Accommodation

Homestay, mid-range hotel or premium property — the single biggest swing.

Transport

Shared vehicle vs private cab, and how much distance the route covers.

Season

Peak spring and autumn dates cost more than the shoulder months.

Permits

Restricted-area paperwork and the vehicles allowed on those routes.

Food

Whether meals are included or paid as you go.

Itinerary

More regions means more driving days and more nights.

Group size

Costs per head fall as the group grows.

Vehicle type

Hill and border routes need experienced drivers and suitable vehicles.

Packing essentials

Travel tips

01

Mountain and rural roads take time.

Distances on a map say very little about how long a Meghalaya drive actually takes.

02

Keep buffer days.

One spare day protects the rest of the itinerary if weather or roads slow you down.

03

Weather changes quickly.

Clear mornings and clouded-over afternoons are normal across the Northeast.

04

Carry identification.

Original photo ID and copies are needed for hotels, permits and check posts.

05

Confirm road and permit status.

Rules and access can change — check closer to travel dates, not weeks earlier.

06

Respect local culture.

Villages, monasteries, churches and sacred sites all have their own etiquette.

Winding Meghalaya hill roads

On two wheels

Meghalaya’s hills are made for short, scenic rides.

Twisty roads between Shillong, Sohra and Dawki reward careful riding and good weather windows — especially outside the heaviest monsoon weeks.

Questions

Meghalaya travel FAQs

What is the best time to visit Meghalaya?

October to May is best for most travellers. Monsoon is spectacular but wetter and slower on the roads and trails.

How many days for Meghalaya?

Four to five days cover Shillong and Sohra. Six to seven days allow Dawki and the root bridge trek without rushing.

Are living root bridges hard to reach?

The Nongriat trek involves steep stairs and humidity. Fit travellers manage it as a long day; others should plan an overnight or skip it.

Is Dawki water always clear?

Clarity varies with rain and season. Dry months usually give the clearest boat-ride views.

Do I need a permit for Meghalaya?

Indian citizens typically do not. Carry ID and pay local village or viewpoint fees where required.

Can Meghalaya be combined with Assam?

Yes. Guwahati is the usual link for Kaziranga before or after the hills.

Is Meghalaya good in the rains?

Yes for waterfall drama, if you accept slippery paths and flexible plans.

Can I customise my Meghalaya trip?

Yes. Share trek comfort, hotel style and whether you want a monsoon or dry-season focus.
